One of the most unexpected victories in presidential history, in 1948 incumbent president Harry Truman defeated Republican challenger Thomas E. Dewey by an electoral count of 303 to 189. In the lead up to the election, popular opinion overwhelmingly held that Dewey would emerge victorious, leading the Republican Chicago Daily Tribune to print an early edition of its November 3rd newspaper with a headline announcing Dewey's victory. Truman was famously photographed triumphantly holding up the newspaper at St. Louis Union Station where his train had stopped en route to Washington.
